Commercial centres, interchanges and industrial stock
Birmingham’s building stock mixes large commercial centres, major rail and bus interchanges, manufacturing sites and public squares. Each setting creates different openings to protect, from shopfronts and office lobbies to loading bays and plant compounds. High-value retail and office blocks sit close to transport hubs, so one development often needs several product types.
Transport interchanges combine high footfall with vehicle approaches, so entrance control and hostile vehicle mitigation often sit in the same specification as rated doorsets. Pedestrian speed gates keep commuter flow moving while stopping tailgating.
Manufacturing and distribution sites on the city’s industrial estates need secure perimeter gates, rated pedestrian doors and shutters that stand up to daily use as well as attack. Security gates and security shutters are the workhorses here.
Public realm and Martyn’s Law
City squares and event spaces fall within the scope of Martyn’s Law, the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025. The standard tier covers premises where 200 to 799 people may be present, and the enhanced tier covers 800 or more.
For public realm projects, protection usually means tested street furniture: bollards and planters rated to PAS 68 or IWA 14-1, placed to stop a vehicle without closing the space to pedestrians. HVM street furniture and security bollards are designed for exactly this.
The Act does not mandate specific products. A risk assessment decides the measures, and we supply the tested barriers, gates and doorsets the assessment calls for. Public spaces guidance covers the typical approach.
Choosing ratings for Birmingham sites
Treat the table as a starting point. The threat assessment fixes the rating for every opening on the site.
| Building type | Security need | Typical rating | Product |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopping and retail centres | Shopfront and rear service doors | LPS 1175 SR2 | Security doors |
| Office blocks | Lobby access control | Speed gates and turnstiles | Turnstiles |
| Rail and bus interchanges | Crowded place protection | PAS 68 barriers | Hostile vehicle mitigation |
| Manufacturing units | Ventilated secure doors | LPS 1175 louvred | Steel louvred doors |
| Distribution sheds | Vehicle and pedestrian gates | Rated gates | Sliding vehicle gates |
| Civic and public buildings | Windows at street level | LPS 1270 glazing | LPS 1270 security glazing |
These are starting points only. The threat assessment sets the rating, and mixed sites often need several ratings across different openings. Our LPS 1175 guide explains the rating classes in full.
Fire separation on commercial and industrial sites
Large floor plates and shared escape routes mean fire rated steel doors are specified alongside security doors. Where one opening needs both, dual rated assemblies carry an EI classification and an LPS 1175 rating in the same doorset, as described on our fire and security doors page.
Warehouses and plant areas also need ventilation that does not weaken the fire line. Fire rated louvre doors give E 60 and E 90 integrity with airflow, so plant rooms stay ventilated and compliant.
Planning and conservation notes
Parts of the city centre are conservation areas, and the historic manufacturing quarters contain listed buildings. External changes to a listed building need Listed Building Consent, and the replacement must suit the facade.
Rated security sash windows suit heritage facades where a modern window would be refused. Internal upgrades to plant rooms and service doors are rarely affected by listing, so back-of-house security can usually be improved without a planning application.
One supplier for doors, glazing and barriers. We manufacture and install the full range, so mixed Birmingham sites get a single point of responsibility from survey to handover.
Frequently asked questions
Do you cover the whole Birmingham area?
Yes. ArxBridge supplies and installs across Birmingham and the surrounding towns. Surveys and installation are arranged from drawings wherever the site is.
What does Martyn’s Law mean for a Birmingham venue?
Venues where 200 or more people may be present fall in scope. The standard tier covers 200 to 799 people and the enhanced tier covers 800 or more, with different duties for each. Physical measures such as barriers and controlled entry form part of the response.
Can one doorset be both fire rated and security rated?
Yes. Dual rated assemblies carry an EI fire classification to EN 1634-1 and an LPS 1175 security rating, tested as one doorset for openings that need both.
Do you install as well as supply?
Yes. We supply and install, and our installation service covers Birmingham sites from survey through to handover.
