What we supply in Southampton

Cruise terminals bring Martyn’s Law duties to Southampton’s doorstep, while the port and logistics estates add HVM and blast considerations. For each of them, ArxBridge supplies and installs rated security doors, windows, blast protection and vehicle barriers across the city.

  • PAS 68 and IWA 14-1Vehicle barriers for terminals
  • LPS 1175 SR2-SR5Doorsets tested against forced entry
  • EXV blast rated glazingTested glass in rated frames
  • EI 30 to EI 120 fire ratingsDoorsets to EN 1634-1

The port estate and its restricted areas

The port handles containers, vehicles and bulk cargo around the clock, and restricted zones inside the estate need controlled access at every gate. Security gates and sliding vehicle gates manage the main entrances, turnstiles handle pedestrian flows, and LPS 1175 security doors protect control rooms, substations and stores, usually SR3 (C5), five minutes against crowbars, drills and chisels. Security bollards tested to PAS 68 protect gates and pedestrian routes where HGVs move, with the rating recording vehicle mass, impact speed, impact angle and penetration distance. The utilities and energy page covers similar restricted estates.

Cruise terminals and Martyn’s Law

The cruise terminals concentrate thousands of passengers, crew and vehicles in one place on sailing days, which brings the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025 into scope. The standard tier covers premises where 200 to 799 people may be present; the enhanced tier covers 800 or more and qualifying events, and must consider physical measures, though the Act does not mandate specific products. For terminals that means hostile vehicle mitigation along drop-off lanes and forecourts, blast resistant glass matched to its frame on glazed concourses, and pedestrian speed gates at staff and crew entrances. The implementation period runs at least 24 months before enforcement, and the Martyn’s Law guide explains the tiers in full.

Logistics, universities and the city centre

Distribution sheds around the port and along the motorway corridors need security shutters and roller doors on dock openings, fire rated steel doors from EI 30 to EI 120 for compartmentation, and steel louvred doors where plant areas need ventilation with a rating. The universities hold teaching blocks, laboratories and halls of residence: halls take communal entrance doors at LPS 1175 SR2 (B3), three minutes against hand tools, while laboratories step up to SR3. The education page explains campus zoning, and city centre retail takes the same shutter and glazing treatment as any high street in the high-value retail sector.

Terminals work to sailing schedules. Installation around the port and cruise terminals is phased to sailing days and shift patterns, so operations keep running while doorsets and barriers are fitted.

Heritage and planning

Parts of Southampton fall in conservation areas, and listed buildings need listed building consent for changes to doors and windows. Security sash windows and security windows rated to LPS 1175 are made to suit historic openings, and we manufacture to surveyed sizes so replacements fit without site cutting.

Do cruise terminals fall under Martyn’s Law?

Where 200 or more people may be present, the premises fall in scope, with the enhanced tier at 800 or more. Terminals should check which tier applies and allow time for physical measures before enforcement begins.

Can HVM be fitted around a working terminal?

Yes. Barrier lines are designed around vehicle and pedestrian flows, and installation is phased to sailing schedules so the terminal keeps operating. Foundations are checked on the survey.

What rating suits port control rooms?

LPS 1175 SR3 (C5) is the common choice, five minutes against crowbars, drills and chisels. Where the room also needs fire integrity, a dual rated assembly combines EI with LPS 1175 in one doorset.

Do you supply the drawings for planning consent?

Yes. We supply drawings and third-party test evidence with every specification, which supports listed building consent and planning applications for facade work in conservation areas.
