Powder coating gives steel doors, frames, louvres, grilles, bollards and gates a hard colour finish that resists chips and weather. It suits architects and contractors who need security metalwork in a specified RAL colour. We coat in house before dispatch.

  • RAL coloursMatched to your specification
  • External gradeFinishes for exposed sites
  • Full pretreatmentBlasted, primed, then coated
  • In houseCoated before dispatch

What the powder coating service includes

Powder coating is a dry finish fused onto steel in an oven. It gives a tougher skin than wet paint and a consistent colour across batches. Steel can also be recoated later if the base metal is sound.

  • Degrease and blast clean of all steel surfaces
  • Zinc rich primer where the specification calls for extra protection
  • Masking of threads, bearings and lock keeps
  • Powder application to the specified colour and finish
  • Oven cure to the powder maker schedule
  • Colour and coverage check before packing
  • Protective wrapping for transport to site

Where old finishes must come off first, shot blasting prepares the steel. Browse the services hub for our other fabrication services.

Hardware interfaces are masked before coating so locks, hinges and closers fit exactly as tested. Threads and bearing faces stay bare, which stops a thick finish seizing a fixing or lifting a keep out of line. On refurbishment work the old finish is assessed first: sound coatings can sometimes be keyed and overcoated, while failed paint must be stripped back to steel.

How the powder coating service runs

  1. Colour. You supply a RAL number or a swatch and we confirm the finish type.
  2. Preparation. The steel is degreased and blast cleaned so the coating can bond.
  3. Priming. A zinc primer is applied where the site is exposed.
  4. Coating. Powder is sprayed on and cured in the oven.
  5. Check. Colour, coverage and adhesion are checked before dispatch.

The deliverables from powder coating

Coated assemblies ready to install, with a colour confirmation against your RAL number and handling notes for site. Because coating happens before dispatch, doorsets arrive finished and need no site painting. Touch up guidance is included for marks made during installation. A finish schedule is kept for repeat orders, so later batches match the first.

When powder coating makes sense

Specify powder coating for architectural projects with a set colour, for external metalwork that must face the weather, and for refurbishment where existing doorsets are sound enough to recoat. It also suits public spaces where bollards and gates must look clean in the public realm, and communal entrance doors where appearance affects how the doorset is treated.

Finish Best for Note
Standard colour coat Internal doors and frames Wide RAL choice
External grade Gates, bollards, louvres Built for weather exposure
Textured finish Grilles and shutters Hides minor surface marks
Primer plus topcoat Exposed steelwork Extra barrier under the colour

Colour matching. Send a RAL number or a physical swatch. The batch is checked against it before it leaves the workshop.

Products covered by powder coating

Almost any steel product we make can be powder coated. That includes steel louvred doors, retractable security grilles, security bollards, security gates and security doors. External items get the external grade finish as standard.

Frequently asked questions

Which colours can you coat?

Any RAL colour, in standard, textured or external grade finishes. Special effects are available on request, and batch consistency is checked before dispatch.

Is powder coating suitable for external use?

Yes. Gates, bollards and louvres get an external grade finish over a zinc primer, which stands up to weather far better than site paint.

Will the coating affect the security or fire rating?

No. The coating is a surface finish on a tested assembly and does not change its construction. Threads, lock keeps and bearing faces are masked so hardware still fits.

Can you recoat existing doors?

Yes, where the steel is sound. The old finish is stripped by shot blasting first, then the doorset is primed and coated like new.
